The Danger of Portfolio Bloat

Registering domains is addictive. An investor might start with 10 carefully selected `.com` domains, but over time, that portfolio can balloon to 500 or 1,000 names. While acquiring these domains might seem cheap during promotional sales, the reality of "Portfolio Carrying Cost" eventually catches up.

What is Portfolio Carrying Cost?

Carrying cost is the total amount of capital required simply to keep your digital assets from expiring. For domain investors, this is almost entirely made up of annual registrar renewal fees.

If you own 500 domains and your registrar charges a flat $12.50 per renewal, your annual carrying cost is $6,250. To simply break even on the year (assuming a 15% marketplace commission), you would need to generate over $7,350 in gross domain sales just to pay for your renewals.

Factoring in Price Increases

Wholesale domain prices are heavily regulated, but they still increase. Verisign, the registry behind `.com`, regularly exercises its right to increase wholesale prices by up to 7% in certain years. Registrars pass these costs directly to investors.

Our Portfolio Calculator allows you to project an Expected Annual Cost Increase. By factoring in inflation and registry price hikes, you can see a realistic 5-year and 10-year projection of your portfolio's financial burden, allowing you to prune underperforming domains before they drain your margins.
